Uterine Fibroids: What Every Woman Needs to Know

By Dr. Leonard Weather Jr.

Uterine fibroids or fibroid tumors are muscular noncancerous tumors that grow in the walls of the uterus and are very common in women of childbearing age. They can grow as a single tumor or in clusters and can be as small as an apple seed to the size of a grapefruit or encompass the entire abdominal area. Such tumors can weigh as much as 50 pounds; the largest reported fibroids ever recorded weighed in at 140 pounds. Thus tumors can be a nuisance, cause pain, a disturbance and even a disaster for countless women.
